COURSE OPTIONS

The following courses are available for students in grades 10 through 12 that reside within the SD 54 boundaries.

Career Education
Career-Life Education 10

Career-Life Education 10 gives students the opportunity to explore their identity and understand the importance of a network. Through activities, students will reflect on important lessons including learning to drive, online safety, being money smart and cell phone plans. The second half of the course focuses on the world of work. Some skills worked on include preparing a resume, writing a cover letter and exploring different career options. Through reflections, students will also consider how to achieve a balance between work and personal life.

English Language Arts
English First Peoples Literary Studies and Writing 10

This English course is a combined course that fulfills the requirement for 4 credits of English Language Arts 10 and the new Indigenous-focused graduation requirement. Successful completion of this course will meet the ministry standards for EFP Literary Studies 10 and EFP Writing 10.

EFP Literary Studies 10 is a good fit for students who are interested in exploring First People’s literature in a variety of contexts, genres, and media. This course is grounded in the understanding of how texts are historically and culturally constructed. Learners will have the opportunity to explore personal and cultural identities, histories, stories, and connections to land/place.

EFP Writing 10 is a good fit for students who are interested in writing for a variety of contexts and purposes. Learners will become better writers through the exploration of identities, memories, stories, and connections to land/place. The course is grounded in the exploration and application of writing processes, giving chances to express oneself while experimenting with, reflecting on, extending, and refining one’s writing.

English First Peoples New Media and Writing 10

This English courses is a combined course that fulfills the requirement for 4 credits of English Language Arts 10 and the new Indigenous-focused graduation requirement. Successful completion of this course will meet the ministry standards for EFP New Media 10 and EFP Writing 10.

EFP New Media 10 is a good fit for students who are interested in exploring the ways that digital media is impacting our communication and exchange of ideas. This course will give learners the opportunity to explore ways that the use of new media is affecting individuals and First Peoples communities and cultures. Learners will be expected to develop the skills needed in an increasingly complex digital works as they demonstrate understanding and communicate ideas using a variety of digital and print media.

EFP Writing 10 is a good fit for students who are interested in writing for a variety of contexts and purposes. Mathematics
Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10

Students considering attending secondary programs should take this course. As an introductory course for other grade 11 and 12 courses, Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 is the bridge to Pre-Calculus 11 and Foundations of Math 11. Topics covered include powers and exponent laws, prime factorization, multiplying and dividing polynomial expressions, trigonometry, linear relations and functions, graphing, function notation, arithmetic sequences, systems of equations and financial literacy. Assessment is based on note packages taken while watching the video lessons, completion of online practice questions, assignments and unit tests.

Workplace Math 10

Workplace Math 10 focuses on real-world application of mathematics found in the workplace. Topics covered include proportional reasoning; measurement of 3-dimensional objects; number sense and flexibility with number; and representing and analyzing data to make sense of it. Assessment is based on note packages taken while watching the video lessons, completion of online practice questions, assignments and unit tests.

Physical and Health Education
Physical and Health Education 10

PE and Health 10 is divided into 4 units: physical literacy, healthy living, social and community health and mental well being. For each unit there is a corresponding 20 hours of activity that needs to be tracked and logged, for a total of 80 hours of physical activity for the course. The PE and Health 10 course will be completed only when the 80 hours of activity are complete as well as the assignments and quizzes from each of the units. You need to participate in at least 3 different activities with no more than 30 hours of any one activity recorded.

Science
Science 10

Science 10 is a general science course aimed at providing students will basic skills required for courses at the grade 11 level. This course looks at four topics: the role of DNA, naming chemical compounds and identifying reactions, work and energy, and the formation of the Universe. Students will complete assignments, projects or labs and tests as part of this online course.

Social Studies
Social Studies 10

Social Studies 10 continues from Social Studies 9’s study of the history of Canada and it’s role in the world. For this course, students will focus on Canada and the World from 1914 to the present.
